Start your grill on 'smoke' with the lid open until a fire is established in the burn pot (3-7 minutes). Preheat to 400F. Place bacon on the bacon rack and let it get brown and crispy, about 10 minutes. Turn off the grill, and remove the bacon.
Place the green beans and the remaining ingredients (except butter) into a large pot. Bring everything to a boil, and then turn the heat down to medium-low. Cover the pot and let it simmer for 1-2 hours, stirring on occasion. Finally, drain the beans and add butter, along with extra salt and pepper to taste, and then finish it off by sprinkling the bacon on top.
